Dispatcher Trainee

Minimum Requirements

  1. Background: Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony and must successfully pass an extensive background investigation which includes a fingerprint check, polygraph, and psychological evaluation.
  2. Shifts: Applicants must be available for all shifts; employees are required to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings, including mandatory overtime; refusal of assigned shift may result in removal from the list or termination. Shift differential is available.
  3. Promotion: Dispatcher Trainees serve under training conditions and must qualify for promotion to Communications Dispatcher within 12 months or be terminated.
  4. Candidates must be 18 years of age at time of application
  5. Keyboarding: These positions require typing skills of 35 wpm. Please indicate typing speed on the application.

Desired Qualifications

  1. One-year dispatching experience preferred but not necessary
  2. Understanding that dispatching is a fast-paced, highly technical, multi-task environment; and possess outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with distressed citizens in highly emotional situations.

Selection Process

Examination: Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take the online written assessment. The assessment will consist of an evaluation of skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Keyboarding skills
  • Data entry
  • Fast-pace decision making
  • Ability to effectively follow verbal instructions
  • Call summarization
  • Memory recall
  • Prioritization of tasks
  • Clear and concise writing ability
  • Reading comprehension
